Saxo review: accounts, fees, custody and platforms
Assess Saxo by entity and account: stocks and other products, conversion and custody, current platforms and checks for an Israeli resident before funding.

Saxo review: who should examine the service
Saxo offers a multi-asset investing and trading environment, allowing investors to examine stocks and ETFs alongside more complex products. It is worth assessing when a workflow requires several markets or currency balances within one account environment. For a small monthly purchase, order minimums, conversion and custody terms also drive the decision. A large product menu does not establish lower costs.
This review covers the international website and the terms described there. Final conditions depend on the contracting entity, residence, product and account tier. An Israeli resident first needs confirmation that an application is accepted and on which terms. A security page or English-language schedule does not approve an account.
The contracting entity and protection scheme
Saxo Bank A/S is the group's Danish bank, supervised by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority. The group also has entities elsewhere. Identify the company in the personal agreement before assigning a licence or protection scheme to an account.
For eligible Saxo Bank A/S clients, the described Danish scheme covers registered cash deposits up to EUR 100,000 equivalent per depositor. Securities should normally be returned. If the firm cannot return them in a covered failure, the scheme describes compensation up to EUR 20,000 equivalent. Scheme conditions and exclusions apply. These amounts do not insure falling share prices or trading losses and do not automatically apply to every group entity.
Classic, Platinum and VIP are service tiers
The international account page presents Classic as the entry tier, without a published minimum funding requirement. Platinum and VIP offer different pricing and service subject to qualification. An account without a general funding threshold still needs enough cash for the intended security and transaction charges. An account-tier name does not confer options or futures permission.
Budget for the tier available to you now. VIP savings are irrelevant if qualification is not expected. If an offer includes a later tier change, establish its effective date, qualification measurement and treatment when conditions change. An account suitable for a large deposit can still be expensive for small transactions because of order minimums.
Match the exact market and instrument
Saxo's offering includes stocks, ETFs and bonds, alongside options, futures, currency products and CFDs. Each needs its own availability, permission and cost assessment. A cash share, an index future and a share CFD create different rights and obligations. The shares, CFDs and futures guide explains those differences before account selection.
Record the ISIN, exchange, trading currency and instrument type when searching. Match the result to the product document, particularly where a fund has several listings or trading currencies. For London access, establish the specific listing and execution channel. Finding a company name in a general search does not prove that the required security is purchasable in your account.
Stock commission needs the applicable minimum
The international account page shows headline US stock and ETF rates of 0.08% for Classic, 0.05% for Platinum and 0.03% for VIP. These do not determine a final order charge without the minimum, exchange and account conditions. A “from” rate is not every security's or every client's price.
Open the security's Trading Conditions and read an estimated order charge for the intended size before submission. Determine whether charges apply per order, fill or execution channel. Assisted instructions may carry a separate service fee. This review therefore does not calculate a share purchase from the percentage alone. Compare another broker using the same quantity and security rather than advertisements for different products.
Currency conversion: one defined component
The international conversion schedule describes an adjustment of up to 0.25% to the reference rate for relevant converted payments. If 0.25% applies to a conversion worth USD 4,000 equivalent, its conversion component is USD 10. This excludes share commission, the security's spread, bank charges and any exchange-rate prediction. It prices one conversion rather than a year's account use.
An appropriate trading-currency balance may reduce repeated conversions. Before using a subaccount, establish which account settles the trade and receives eventual sale proceeds. Changing the displayed currency alone does not protect against currency risk. Also identify the deposit route: cash sent, cash received and cash settling the purchase are distinct stages.
Custody and securities lending
Custody depends on account location, entity, tier and securities-lending arrangements. The international Other countries row lists annual rates without lending, where applicable, of 0.15% for Classic, 0.12% for Platinum and 0.09% for VIP. That row also describes a conditional waiver with lending enabled. An Israeli account cannot be assigned to that row merely from the website language.
Obtain your account's condition before moving a substantial portfolio. If a waiver requires lending, read its separate agreement and enrollment and exit rules. Establish what is authorized, how records show it and what stopping requires. Cost assessment should reflect the service arrangement you are willing to accept; a conditional waiver does not justify entering zero custody in every comparison.
Calculate custody over the actual holding period
The help centre describes a daily calculation using closing holding value multiplied by the annual rate and divided by the applicable yearly day count. The monthly debit sums those daily amounts, and the value date starts the charging period. Day-count conventions can differ by currency.
Its example uses 1,000 shares at a constant EUR 25, an applicable 0.12% annual custody rate and a 360-day denominator: 25,000 × 0.0012 ÷ 360 is approximately EUR 0.08333 daily. If those same conditions and value hold for 30 chargeable days, the component is EUR 2.50 before applicable taxes. This conditionally illustrates the formula rather than quoting an Israeli account. Changing prices or midmonth deposits require recalculation by day.
SaxoInvestor or SaxoTrader
The current international site presents SaxoInvestor for web or mobile investing and SaxoTrader for trading and analysis across its product range on web, mobile and desktop. Platform availability also depends on residence. SaxoTrader tools and data can be version- or subscription-dependent; installing software does not establish an included live exchange feed.
Choose around a task: portfolio monitoring and a straightforward order, or analysis and execution requiring additional screens and tools. In a demo, locate instrument type, available cash, order status and post-trade records. A demo helps users learn operations but does not establish live execution prices, slippage or permissions in a real account.
Two workflows for assessing fit
Someone making a small monthly deposit and buying one security should start with the purchase minimum and conversion, then assess custody on accumulating holdings. Multiplying all annual contributions by an annual rate incorrectly assumes they were all invested from the start. The foreign-currency portfolio comparison provides a staged-contribution model.
Frequent trading across currencies also needs data subscriptions, balances in each subaccount and channel-specific charges. Futures and options add permissions, margin and expiry. Moving to leverage to “save” a share commission changes both the transaction and its risk. Choose the required exposure first and then price it. A saving on one service component is not a prediction of portfolio profit.
Account acceptance, records and exit
Saxo requests identification details, a tax number for the country of residence, identity evidence and proof of address. State actual residence and citizenship. The final agreement identifies the entity; interface language does not. For Israel, obtain current confirmation of the application process and intended products before funding. This review does not establish acceptance.
Before opening, determine how to download confirmations and cash reports, and the cost of special services or transferring securities out. Assess each security line and the receiving account's conditions. A sale-and-withdrawal route separates selling, conversion and bank transfer. Foreign withholding, if any, does not establish completion of Israeli reporting. Retain sufficient records even if closing the account.
For an in-kind portfolio transfer, prepare a before-and-after reconciliation: security identifier, quantity, currency and recorded acquisition cost. Establish treatment of dividends or cash arriving after the transfer. Moving the correct quantity alone does not confirm that every acquisition detail was recorded. Retain both accounts' documents until any discrepancy is resolved.
Practical Saxo questions
Is Saxo suitable for long-term holdings? Assess applicable custody, conversions and report access. A yearly charge on holdings can matter more than a small difference on one purchase.
Can every stock shown on the website be bought? Check the exact security and permission in the particular account. A public product card is not execution approval.
Is the advertised commission rate enough? You need the minimum, market and channel. A planned-size order estimate is more useful than a percentage headline.
What should be compared with IBKR? Use the same security, currency, quantity, holding period and exit workflow. The IBKR versus Saxo comparison develops the route-specific questions. Obtain the terms for an account you can actually apply for before deciding. Investments through any broker can lose value.
