How to connect a TradingView alert to TradersPost via webhook

A step-by-step guide based on the official docs: create a strategy, copy the webhook URL, write a JSON message and connect a subscription to a broker.

Before you start

You need three things: a TradersPost account, a TradingView account with a script or indicator that generates alerts, and a broker or exchange account supported by TradersPost. It is a good idea to start with a TradersPost Paper account, which supports all asset classes, and move to a live account only after you have seen signals arrive and parse correctly. Automated trading places real orders without manual approval, and trading and investing carry a risk of losing money. Test every setting in a simulated environment before connecting real money.

Step 1: connect a broker

In the TradersPost dashboard, click Connect Broker in the top right and choose the broker. Confirm that you are authorized to trade the account, then go to the broker's site to log in and authorize TradersPost. After approving, you return to TradersPost and the account appears as connected. At this stage you choose which account at the broker is used for live trading and which for paper trading. According to the docs, TradersPost cannot move money into or out of the account. Check on the connections page that your broker supports the asset class you plan to trade.

Step 2: create a strategy and copy the webhook URL

A strategy in TradersPost holds the webhook URL and the broker connections. When you create a strategy you set its asset class, trading style, ticker and the defaults that subscriptions will inherit. After creating it you get a webhook URL unique to the strategy. According to the docs, the URL format includes a unique identifier and a password, so treat it like a password: anyone holding it can send signals to the strategy. Copy it; you will use it in step 4. The same URL can be used by any system that sends a webhook, not only TradingView.

Step 3: write the JSON message

TradingView sends TradersPost whatever is written in the alert's message field. The docs stress that the JSON structure must be exactly correct, otherwise TradersPost cannot parse it. The ticker and action fields are required, and price is common in the examples. If the alert comes from a TradingView strategy, one alert is enough: the variable strategy.order.action in double curly braces fills in buy or sell, and strategy.market_position indicates long, short or flat. If the alert comes from an indicator, create a separate alert for buying and a separate one for exiting, for example with action set to exit or sentiment set to flat.

Step 4: create the alert in TradingView

According to the docs, open the Alerts pane in TradingView and select the condition from your script. Set the alert to trigger on bar close. In the Webhook URL field, paste the strategy's TradersPost webhook URL. In the Message field, paste the JSON you prepared in the previous step. Save the alert. From now on, whenever the condition is met, TradingView sends the message to the URL, and TradersPost receives it as a signal for the strategy. If the message is not structured correctly, TradersPost cannot parse it, so copy the JSON carefully.

Step 5: subscription, testing and delays

A signal that reaches the strategy does not reach the broker without a subscription. The subscription connects the strategy to the broker account and controls which orders are sent. You can connect the same strategy to a paper account and a live account in parallel, with different rules for each. The strategy's Signals view shows every signal received, with ticker, action and timestamp, so you can confirm alerts are arriving. The docs note that TradingView webhooks can be delayed from 2-3 seconds to 60 seconds or more. Factor this delay into time-sensitive strategies.

Which fields are required in the JSON message?

According to the docs, ticker and action are required in every message. Fields such as quantity, orderType, stopLoss and takeProfit are optional.

What values can go in the action field?

The docs list buy, sell, exit, reverse, breakeven, cancel, add and resize.

Why did the signal reach TradersPost but no order was sent?

Check that a subscription connects the strategy to a broker account. The subscription is what links a strategy to a broker and controls which orders are sent.

How long does a signal take to arrive?

The docs note that TradingView webhooks can be delayed from 2-3 seconds to 60 seconds or more.
