Charles Schwab vs Fidelity: investing and stock trading
When stock base commission is zero, assess account scope, securities, fractions, trading tools, service charges and portfolio portability before choosing.

Schwab vs Fidelity: what to compare when both advertise zero
Charles Schwab versus Fidelity cannot be settled by a zero base commission. Schwab International shows zero for online listed securities, while Fidelity shows zero for online US equities under the described retail account terms. Important differences involve account type, security, service activities and long-term portfolio management.
For ordinary American-stock purchases, both figures deserve assessment. A foreign fund, representative-assisted transaction or security with special settlement terms makes the ordinary line insufficient. Fractions also require separate reading of order and transfer conditions. A winner need not be invented when both services might match a routine.
Write the intended sequence beforehand: funding, identifying a security, purchasing, receiving payments and checking statements. Add a less frequent activity such as moving brokers. This makes the decision follow required services and applicable charges instead of a marketing feature list.
The Schwab review and Fidelity review describe each brand individually. This comparison focuses on stock-portfolio and interface fit using defined facts and conditions. It claims no personal trading experience, guaranteed approval or protection from declining value through lower commissions.
Schwab vs Fidelity: US accounts and overseas customers
For an overseas reader, comparison begins with account policy. Schwab One International is described for international investors seeking American-market access, with residence selection and documentation during application. It does not approve every country. US Fidelity says it does not open accounts for new customers residing outside the United States. The brands should therefore not be shown as automatically available to the same overseas resident.
Existing holders also face different questions from new applicants. Fidelity describes restrictions after relocation, with activities varying by country and account type. Retaining an existing investment does not necessarily permit new purchases or additional services.
The current Schwab international page states no opening deposit minimum for individual or joint accounts. That does not promise approval or define options permissions and collateral requirements. At either provider, a trading schedule does not answer every account question.
Prepare residence, ownership and funding information before deciding. Ask about the actual intended products rather than only a generic account. Site language and citizenship do not replace reported residence. If a route does not fit, its pricing can still inform an educational comparison, but it should not be presented as an available offer to you.
Schwab vs Fidelity: online trading and other activities
A price table must identify the activity each number concerns. For ordinary online US-stock trading, zero base commission is only part of the picture. Options carry contract fees, and representative assistance can have different pricing. Extra charges and security conditions remain relevant.
Scroll the table horizontally to read every column.
| Defined activity | Schwab International | US retail Fidelity |
|---|---|---|
| Appropriate American stocks online | USD 0 base commission for listed securities | USD 0 base commission for the defined online activity |
| Ordinary online US options | USD 0 base plus USD 0.65/contract | USD 0 base plus USD 0.65/contract under specified terms |
| Selecting foreign-security pricing | Separate product and execution-channel terms | Separate market, route and settlement terms |
Two ordinary online contracts, assuming USD 0.65 applies without a waiver, create a USD 1.30 component. That is not complete pricing for every option, particularly proprietary index products. Permissions, additions and exceptions need review before use.
At Schwab, three hypothetical assisted listed-stock transactions at USD 25 each create a USD 75 component. This illustrates why channel belongs in the plan beforehand. Fidelity likewise has separate pricing for services and classifications. Do not extend ordinary retail figures to professional clients, foreign securities or other services without the appropriate schedule.
Schwab vs Fidelity: fractional shares including ETFs
Schwab's current page describes fractions of most US-listed stocks and ETFs from USD 1 and explains that Stock Slices is now called fractional shares. Fidelity also describes eligible American stocks and ETFs in fractions from USD 1. A historical Schwab restriction should not be used to claim that fractional ETFs are absent today.
In a hypothetical example, USD 120 allocated to an eligible security priced at USD 80 gives 1.5 shares before rounding, price changes or charges. This recommends no security; it explains how a chosen amount can work without selecting a whole-unit quantity.
Check permitted order types, hours and post-execution quantities. Permission to buy by amount does not establish support for every advanced instruction. Fractional rights can differ from whole-share rights: provider documentation specifies voting and certain corporate-action limitations.
Both providers describe fractional transfer limitations. Compare small-portfolio entry convenience alongside exit treatment. A move to another broker requires handling nontransferable fractions through sales under the terms. Fractions can fit an amount-based routine but guarantee neither diversification nor complete portability, and account and security checks still apply.
Schwab vs Fidelity: thinkorswim and Trader+ by task
Schwab describes thinkorswim across desktop, browser and mobile. Fidelity describes Trader+ Desktop, formerly Active Trader Pro, alongside its tool environment. An unchecked older name can make a comparison reflect outdated documentation. Screenshots and indicator count do not settle the choice.
For periodic purchases, assess whether instrument, available cash and order status are understandable without excessive navigation. Active trading adds filtering, partial execution monitoring and data presentation. Options require specifications and analytical tools after appropriate approval, not simply a displayed chain.
Order details remain important in every application. A limit does not guarantee execution, and a market instruction does not guarantee the last displayed price. Software should help you read what will be submitted and verify what happened. The stock order guide provides a foundation before choosing an interface.
A desktop feature can behave differently on mobile, so assess the device you intend to use. Data and professional classification also have separate conditions. No personal performance or support measurement was conducted here. Fit means defining tasks and assessing whether they can be completed clearly, without turning a software preference into a claim about trading quality or profitability.
Schwab vs Fidelity: idle cash and funds are not stock trades
Zero stock commission is not a tariff for everything inside the account. Idle cash, a money-market fund, a mutual fund and a listed security are different states or products. Establish where cash is held, liquidity conditions and what product is purchased without assuming a figure beside cash means guaranteed interest or capital protection.
Fidelity's schedule distinguishes its funds, non-Fidelity no-transaction-fee funds and transaction-fee funds. For non-Fidelity NTF funds it lists a USD 49.95 redemption charge when held less than 60 days. That is not a fee on every fund or stock. Two hypothetical redemptions meeting those conditions create USD 99.90.
The example shows that no transaction fee does not necessarily mean no conditions at every stage. Read exit terms and the fund details. Schwab International separately prices fund products and other instruments; Fidelity's American fund conditions should not be transferred to them.
If the plan holds cash between deposits and purchases, add the cash or fund type and required access timing to the worksheet. Assess the process without recommending a fund or quoting an unverified yield. Low stock-purchase pricing can become less central when other activities use products with different charges, so compare the full account routine rather than only its stock order.
Schwab vs Fidelity: the same company through different foreign securities
Company or index name does not select a pricing line. Schwab International places UCITS ETFs in an assisted route separate from online listed securities. At Fidelity, trading shares directly on a foreign stock exchange differs from trading foreign ordinaries through a US market or buying ADRs. Do not compare tickers without reading what they represent.
For a foreign company, record exchange, currency and security identifier. Establish whether the price concerns International Stock Trading, ordinary American trading or another channel. Fidelity's USD 50 non-DTC settlement fee applies to the specified foreign ordinary classification rather than every foreign exposure.
Conversion also follows the route. Local-currency settlement differs from dollars with a linked currency instruction. Some costs can be embedded in the execution price. Do not add every apparently foreign-related pricing line to one transaction; identify the completed process to avoid double counting.
A reader seeking only listed US holdings can leave irrelevant foreign routes outside the plan. Someone intending additional securities needs this assessment before deciding. Displaying a security does not establish purchasing or transfer permission. The comparison becomes precise by following the instrument rather than a broad description of its underlying company.
Schwab vs Fidelity: transferring without losing the records
A move begins with receiving-account acceptance and security checks. Permissions, open orders and identity records do not automatically migrate with holdings. Both providers supporting fractions does not make fractional components transferable between them. Sales and cash movements require separate records.
For the illustrative 1.5-share position, establish treatment of the whole share and 0.5 component under the transfer route. Do not assume the entire holding is copied as one quantity. Exact terms and the fractional sale price determine what is recorded, potentially leaving cash to reconcile later.
Preserve confirmations, currency movements, receipts and acquisition information. Afterwards verify quantity and identifier for every security, including cash or dividends arriving after the principal date. Different account values do not prove a transfer error because reporting currency and valuation time can differ.
If residence changes motivate the move, assess account policy first. Fidelity's new-customer restriction and existing-account treatment answer different questions. This article promises neither local tax-report sufficiency nor a fixed completion date. Organized records make provider questions precise instead of leaving uncertainty about what transferred, sold or remained open.
Schwab vs Fidelity: choose around three core tasks
The first task is routine purchasing. If both accounts fit, the security is American and the transaction is online, base-commission differences may be small or absent. Assess funding, order type and fractional treatment instead of seeking an advantage not established by the tariff.
The second task is monitoring. Infrequent investors need understandable holdings, balances and statements. Those managing many orders need suitable status tools and alerts. Assess thinkorswim and Trader+ against the same tasks without assuming a professional appearance makes either better.
The third task is exit. Fractions, foreign securities and accounts after relocation can change transfer routes. Compare conditions before urgency arises and preserve records throughout. Ease of the first purchase does not adequately measure years of portfolio management.
Fidelity deserves assessment for an eligible American investor seeking purchasing routines and tools in the described account. Schwab International deserves assessment for an accepted international customer seeking the specified US-market route. These are conditional fits rather than an overall ranking. Inappropriate account conditions are not changed by a zero-commission headline. Shares can lose value, and broker selection remains separate from securities, personal advice and risk allocation.
