FP Markets vs OANDA: start with the correct offer

FP Markets vs OANDA compares two currency-trading workflows, but a brand name does not identify the product. This article examines FP Markets through its international account table and OANDA through OANDA Corporation in the United States. An international CFD account and a US forex offering are different contracts, even when both display EUR/USD.

For software selection, FP Markets lists several environments alongside Standard and Raw accounts. US OANDA offers its own web and mobile environment plus additional connections. For price evaluation, the relevant question is the cost of the same exposure in the same account currency, including both commission legs and financing, rather than the smallest number on a marketing page.

Begin with a short specification: the currency pair, usual size, holding period and required working environment. If the plan also includes share or index CFDs, do not assume those products belong to the US offering examined here. A different group product requires a fresh comparison of the company and its contract.

The FP Markets review and OANDA review provide each provider’s context. Alongside software requirements, record whether the trade closes the same day and whether order size is entered in lots or currency units. These details determine which costs must be added and which fields the comparison statement needs.

FP Markets and OANDA: compare individual components

The table separates account facts from product selection. It does not rank execution quality or turn a minimum advertised spread into an executable price at a particular time.

Scroll the table horizontally to read every column.

Selecting a pricing plan is separate from selecting a company. A preferred interface may still be paired with an account tariff that offers no advantage for the intended trades. Raw does not automatically transfer protections from another FP Markets company, and Core is not a group-wide OANDA tariff.

Use the table as an initial filter: identify an essential component, then examine the conditions of the specific account. Someone making a few manual trades each month can start with simpler pricing comparisons. An established workflow also requires a server, instrument identifier and permission check. A larger platform list provides little benefit if none supports the required process.

FP Raw versus OANDA Core: normalize the commission

FP Markets’ international MT4/MT5 table lists Raw forex commission of USD 3 per lot per side for a USD account. OANDA’s US help page lists Core commission of USD 0.70 per 10,000 units per side. Bring both figures to the same trade size; comparing 3 with 0.70 without their denominators is misleading.

For 100,000 base-currency units, FP’s opening and closing commission totals USD 6. OANDA’s calculation is ten blocks of 10,000, multiplied by 0.70, multiplied by two legs: USD 14. This compares commission alone, in a USD account and the specified plans, without spread costs or an execution advantage.

The Core help page requires an initial deposit or balance of at least USD 10,000. That is a condition of this particular plan, not a fee or evidence that every OANDA account requires that amount. Even a reader able to meet it must confirm that the plan is offered and enabled for the actual account and server.

Do not copy a USD tariff into an account denominated in another currency. FP publishes separate account-currency rows, while OANDA also describes account-currency charges. The Raw break-even guide expands the comparison method. Record the denominator, billing currency and both trade legs before doing the calculation.

FP Markets and OANDA example: commission gap versus spread gap

Assume a EUR/USD trade of 100,000 euros in a USD account. Define a pip here as USD 0.0001 per euro, making it worth USD 10. Assume an unchanged midpoint, equal entry and exit spreads, and no slippage, financing or conversion. These are educational assumptions; the following spreads were not sampled at either provider.

Choose hypothetical spreads of 0.4 pips on FP Raw and 0.1 pips on OANDA Core. The modeled cost is USD 4 of spread plus USD 6 of commission at FP, totaling USD 10. At OANDA it is USD 1 of spread plus USD 14 of commission, totaling USD 15. A narrower spread can accompany a higher total cost.

The commission gap is USD 8 per lot. A Core spread saving of exactly 0.8 pips against Raw offsets it and produces equal costs, because 8 divided by 10 is 0.8. A saving greater than 0.8 pips makes Core cheaper under the example’s assumptions. This condition compares only these specific plans and does not predict either provider’s spread when an order is submitted.

With a constant price and spread, count one spread across the round trip and two commissions. When execution prices change, the trade result already reflects buying at the ask and selling at the bid; do not add the same spread again to the statement. Useful measurement separates estimated costs, execution prices and charges actually booked.

FP Markets and OANDA platforms: connect before ordering

FP Markets’ global account table lists MT4, MT5 and cTrader for Standard, with TradingView added on Raw. The US OANDA offering lists MT4, TradingView and its proprietary environments. Selection involves more than chart appearance: the account, instrument and pricing plan must be those actually used to submit an order.

An existing MT4 user can begin by checking the account and server display before transferring an entire workspace. OANDA Core uses instrument suffixes that depend on the server. A similarly named currency pair is insufficient to identify the pricing plan. If practicing in a demo, include the instrument specification and charge display in the evaluation record.

Within TradingView, distinguish a general chart, paper trading and a broker connection. A screen showing EUR/USD from one data source does not confirm that the connected account offers the same product or cost. Select the appropriate broker account, confirm order size and units, and inspect how a position appears after opening and closing.

cTrader or MT5 at FP may matter for a workflow already built around them. OANDA’s own environment may instead suit someone starting with order management inside the provider’s tools. This is a match to operational requirements, not a claim that one interface is easier for everyone or that a demo proves live execution.

Holding FP Markets and OANDA positions overnight: separate financing

Someone closing before rollover focuses mainly on spread, commission and execution. Someone holding for several days must add financing for each position. A lower commission structure does not mean cheaper holding costs, and a rate observed on one day is not a forecast for the entire holding period.

OANDA Corporation describes a debit or credit for positions open at 17:00 ET. Long and short rates differ, and financing is based on position value and the applicable annual rate. Settlement schedules, weekends and holidays can create a charge representing more than one day.

For FP, read the selected instrument and account terms rather than importing OANDA’s schedule into another platform. A useful record contains the time and time zone, position direction, size, financing rate and the number of days represented by the charge. This distinguishes a larger charge caused by multiple settlement days from a change in the rate itself.

Evaluating a week-long trade also requires an extended-holding scenario: how would costs change if the exit were delayed another day or crossed a weekend? This is a cost-budgeting method, not a recommendation to keep a position open. If a strategy depends on financing credits, evaluate both pair directions and all other risks separately.

Automation at FP Markets and OANDA: software and permission

An existing automated order system adds a contractual question to the comparison. Technical platform support is insufficient to establish that the account’s company permits the intended activity. Describe the process: does software merely display an alert, submit an order, or change working orders without manual intervention?

Section 14.14 of the FP Markets Ltd Saint Lucia agreement requires express prior written consent before using automated data-entry systems or robots. Accordingly, EA support in an account table is not blanket permission for every client and entity. Check that condition before funding or moving an existing system.

OANDA describes building and testing automated strategies in MT4, but the trading account and its applicable conditions still need to match. Backtesting is a software capability; it is not confirmation that historical results can be reproduced live. Changing the quote source, spread or instrument identifier can change system behavior.

A sound migration check records assumptions first: contract size, volume increment, stop calculation and server time. Then inspect order submission, cancellation, errors and reconnection in a suitable environment. A brief profitable test does not justify ranking a broker. The relevant measure is whether requirements and account permissions are clear and the process behaves as specified.

FP Markets and OANDA account costs when trading pauses

A single-trade comparison is insufficient for someone who opens an account and uses it infrequently. Separate trading costs, money-transfer costs and inactive-account costs. A rule based on logging in differs from one based on trading; these are different actions, not interchangeable descriptions of one condition.

OANDA’s US charges page lists USD 20 monthly after 12 months without trading activity, with an exemption for open positions. FP’s Saint Lucia agreement lists USD 10 monthly after a continuous 90-day period under the clause’s inactivity definition, where funds are available. The agreement also contains archiving conditions and prevents this fee creating a negative balance.

Compare the triggers and companies as well as the amounts. A reader planning two months of practice followed by a lengthy pause needs to examine remaining funds, withdrawal methods and account closure. A weekly trader may focus on other costs. These figures do not establish an inactivity charge for an account with another FP entity.

Before selecting an account, record deposit and withdrawal currencies too. Transfers in another currency can introduce conversion or bank and payment-provider charges distinct from broker commission. A cost record helps explain what was sent, converted and left in the account. Withdrawable funds do not necessarily equal the total balance while positions remain open.

FP Markets and OANDA risk: margin is not a loss budget

Margin describes the capital required to establish exposure, not the maximum possible loss. A large position can be opened with a comparatively small amount, after which a small price movement affects a much larger exposure. Evaluate trade size and the ability to bear losses first, without awarding a higher ranking to greater leverage.

Do not apply an international-table figure to every FP Markets account. Its Australian retail table advertises a maximum of 1:30, with lower limits for some instruments. Australia’s protection framework is separate from the Saint Lucia agreement; a proposed regulatory extension is not an amendment already in force.

OANDA Corporation’s US warning includes the possibility of losing more than the investment and the absence of SIPC protection for forex accounts. Registration or oversight does not guarantee compensation for trading losses. Balance protection, complaint procedures and custody of another asset are separate product-specific questions.

A conventional stop defines an exit mechanism, not a guaranteed closing price. FP’s Saint Lucia execution policy describes slippage affecting such orders. Someone planning to trade near announcements or market openings should examine allowances for costs and price movement and what happens when liquidity falls. This process does not make leveraged trading a low-risk investment.

Choose between FP Markets and OANDA using a defined scenario

If MT5 or cTrader is required within the examined FP offer, begin by checking a compatible account there. If the objective is OANDA’s US forex service and its own environment, examine spread-only pricing and the Core conditions. Neither conclusion confirms admission, and no overall winner removes the need to review the contract.

For a short manual-trading scenario, build one comparison row containing pair, size, spread at the observation time and opening/closing commission. For several days of holding, add direction and financing schedule. For automation, add written permission where required, the server and instrument identifiers. Requirements determine what must be established before price can decide.

A common follow-up is whether Raw is always cheaper. Spread savings must cover the commission difference and other costs. The FP Standard and Raw comparison focuses on selection within one provider. If the platform connection is the obstacle, the Eightcap and OANDA comparison adds an alternative with a defined product scope.

Before deciding, read or request the specification of the account actually offered and retain its relevant pricing terms. Then practice the required control actions without treating a demo as an execution-quality test. TradeVenn publishes comparisons: this article explains differences and evaluation methods, while a financial decision must fit personal circumstances and the losses one can bear.

About the provider

At FP Markets, Raw forex on MT4/MT5 in a USD account costs $3 per side per lot: $6 to open and close, before spread and financing. Standard includes forex charges in the spread. The global table lists MT4, MT5 and cTrader for both accounts and TradingView for Raw, with the documented connection using cTrader ID. Terms and protections depend on the entity; leveraged trading can cause rapid losses.

Service model
Leveraged CFD trading on currencies and other underlying markets; a CFD does not confer ownership of a share, digital currency or underlying asset.

The execution policy of Saint Lucia's FP Markets Ltd specifies cash settlement without delivery of the underlying asset.

Account types
