Distinguish a provider-held account from a self-custody wallet
In a custodial account, the provider manages the keys needed to transact with the assets. With a self-custody wallet, the user is responsible for controlling and backing up the keys. A wallet does not store coins like a physical wallet; it provides access to assets recorded on the network. Losing a key or backup may prevent access. A custody service, on the other hand, adds dependence on the account terms and the provider’s security.
Ask which transactions are available in the country
Access to a wallet does not necessarily mean access to an exchange, and the ability to hold an asset does not necessarily mean permission to deposit money from a bank or withdraw to it. Check the required service in the country of residence: buying, selling, trading, deposits and withdrawals. For example, Coinbase’s documents distinguish between the trading app and the wallet, and its US agreement states that services and assets vary by region. Without appropriate evidence, eligibility remains unknown.
Check the order, not just its name
In an order book, a resting order may add liquidity, while an order that immediately matches an existing order takes liquidity. A limit order therefore does not automatically mean a maker fee: a limit order that executes immediately may be a taker. A simple purchase may include a spread and pricing that differs from advanced trading. Check the fee, the amount to be received and the applicable tier on the confirmation screen, rather than a uniform price that does not fit the transaction.
Separate trading fees from transfer fees
Before a transfer, check that the asset, network and address match the receiving service’s instructions, and that all additional required details are included. Coinbase’s US agreement warns about errors in these details, but does not establish transfer availability or a right to recovery for an account in Israel. A network or withdrawal fee is not the same as a purchase fee. Keep a record of the transfer terms and confirmation screen without publishing keys or backup codes. When the supported network or recovery options are unclear, there is no reason to treat the send button as a safe way to test them.
