FTMO CFD versus Topstep: choose the market first

FTMO CFD and Topstep address different needs even when both use funded-account language. This comparison examines FTMO's CFD evaluation and Topstep's standard futures programme. FTMO also offers a separate Futures product, so this scope does not imply that all FTMO activity involves CFDs. The following terms apply only to the selected products.

FTMO assesses trading behaviour using simulated capital. At Topstep, Trading Combine and Express Funded Account are simulated stages; Live Funded Account is a separate live stage. Progression depends on the company's process and does not happen automatically because an evaluation was passed or a payout requested. An account label alone does not establish the environment in which activity occurs.

If your method was developed on currency CFDs, switching to futures requires checking contract size, expiry month and trading hours. If you already work with exchange futures intraday, begin with the futures programme. The FTMO review and Topstep review explain each service. Paying for a programme is not an investment deposit; it is a participation cost under rules that permit failure. Start the assessment with the task and market you can already document.

CFDs and futures in the FTMO–Topstep comparison: the trading unit

Similar instrument names can hide a different trading unit. An index CFD and a futures contract on that index are not the same position. Futures require checking symbol, expiry month, multiplier and tick size; CFD evaluation requires the symbol specification, lot size and simulated-environment costs. Copying the quantity or stop distance from an old platform does not reproduce the same dollar loss.

Topstep publishes permitted instruments and trading hours. Standard Combine position limits depend on account size, with micro and mini contracts counted at a ten-to-one ratio. That ratio is described for Combine and Express; it does not authorize copying their limits into Live. Different micro contracts can also have different multipliers and monetary exposure.

The same 50K label at FTMO and Topstep, different loss room

The displayed account size is not the loss budget. As an arithmetic illustration, FTMO 2-Step with USD 50,000 initial simulated capital has a USD 5,000 overall allowance and a static USD 45,000 floor. Its daily allowance is USD 2,500 of initial capital, assessed under the daily rule. A standard Topstep 50K Combine has an initial USD 2,000 overall allowance and starts with a USD 48,000 floor.

Relative to the same headline number, USD 2,000 is 4% of USD 50,000, compared with the 10% FTMO 2-Step overall allowance. This normalizes the comparison rather than rating programme quality. Topstep's label does not mean you deposited USD 50,000 or can lose the displayed amount. Express starts with a zero balance, and buying power remains a separate concept.

For a planned trade, start with the current distance from the boundary rather than the advertised balance. How much room remains after fees and floating losses? Are several positions exposed to the same move? Is the closer boundary daily or overall? Multiplying the account label by an arbitrary risk percentage does not answer those questions.

A maximum contract count is not a recommended position size either. You can use fewer contracts and examine how the journal behaves within the actual room. An amount permitted by a rule is not an amount to target as a loss.

FTMO's static floor versus Topstep's end-of-day trailing floor

FTMO 2-Step uses a static overall floor. Standard Topstep trails its loss boundary as the end-of-day balance rises, never lowers it again, and locks it at the starting balance. Both require compliance during trading; an end-of-day update is not permission to cross the existing floor intraday.

Consider a hypothetical Combine starting at USD 50,000. After a day closes at USD 50,500, Topstep's floor rises from USD 48,000 to USD 48,500. The next day's balance returns to USD 50,000, but the floor remains USD 48,500, leaving USD 1,500. An arithmetic comparison with FTMO 2-Step's static overall floor leaves USD 5,000 above USD 45,000 at the same USD 50,000 balance, before checking the daily limit.

A gain followed by an equal loss therefore does not necessarily restore the original programme position. Traders with sharp end-of-day reversals should assess the closing-balance sequence rather than only cumulative profit. This illustration is neither actual performance nor an account-price example.

FTMO 1-Step does not belong on the static side of this comparison: it has its own trailing rule and account-cohort consistency conditions. Put the programme name beside every calculation. Otherwise the choice can depend on a floor that does not apply.

A trading day at FTMO and Topstep: clocks, holding and closing

Topstep describes a day-trading programme. Positions must close by 15:10 CT on weekdays, or sooner when an instrument has an earlier close; activity resumes under the programme schedule. Positions cannot carry from one session into the next. Opening before the close does not authorize holding until a price target is reached.

FTMO CFD holding and news conditions depend on phase and account type. Evaluation and Swing exceptions differ from the subsequent Standard account. A method involving multiday trades requires examining progression terms rather than noticing only that the challenge permits holding.

For someone working in another country, the end of the trading day is not one fixed local hour throughout the year. Convert CT or CE(S)T for the actual date and check weeks with different daylight-saving changeovers. Set a closing reminder and allow time to confirm the result instead of waiting for automatic flattening.

A useful scenario is a busy day when you cannot watch the screen near session end. Can you confirm the position is closed and pending orders cancelled? Does the method require carrying through a market break? If so, the examined Topstep programme does not fit that holding action. This is a defined process limitation, not a judgment of company quality.

Topstep versus FTMO consistency: the phase determines the ratio

Standard Topstep Combine uses a 55% consistency target: the largest winning day must remain within the permitted proportion of net profit, otherwise the total required to pass increases. This is an evaluation condition. Express offers Standard or Consistency payout paths, with 40% on Consistency. The money target, best-day ratio and activity-day count are different requirements.

For arithmetic illustration, a USD 1,800 best day divided by 0.55 gives USD 3,272.727, requiring at least USD 3,272.73 at cent precision if no new best day occurs. Relative to the USD 3,000 base target for 50K, the arithmetic difference is USD 272.73. Do not round the ratio downward to declare completion; the account metric and exact rule govern.

FTMO 1-Step applies 50% Consistency to accounts originating from orders created on or after 12 October 2026, and accounts merged on or after that date: the denominator includes closed-trade profits and losses across all days. Accounts directly initiated from earlier orders and not merged retain Best Day using profitable-day profit only. Exceeding the ratio is not itself a breach, but compliance is required to complete the Challenge or qualify for a reward. This rule does not apply to FTMO 2-Step or Topstep.

For methods with profit concentrated in one day, assess the original day sequence. Removing a losing day from the worksheet can distort the result. Trying to complete the requirement through additional trading on the same best day can also enlarge the numerator instead of resolving the condition.

FTMO CFD fees versus Combine subscriptions: time changes the cost

FTMO CFD uses a one-time evaluation payment. Standard Topstep Combine renews every 30 days until passing or cancellation. Unlimited time to pass therefore does not mean remaining in the programme without further cost. Time becomes a budget component even when you wait for opportunities that fit the method.

For standard 50K Topstep, the Standard billing path lists USD 49 per month and USD 149 to activate Express after passing. No Activation Fee lists USD 95 per month without that activation charge. These are base USD prices before taxes and add-ons. The billing-path choice is different from the later choice between Express Standard and Express Consistency; the decisions occur at different stages.

FTMO 2-Step purchase fees can be returned with the first reward request under the terms. A refund does not eliminate the risk of paying for an unsuccessful attempt. At Topstep, breaching a loss rule does not automatically cancel the subscription; renewal and reset options require separate attention.

Budget for both a short and an extended scenario without assuming how quickly you will pass. The FTMO, FundedNext and Topstep cost comparison explains the billing-path break-even point. If waiting makes you trade merely to justify another charge, that reveals something about how the billing model fits your habits.

After FTMO or Combine: rewards and a new environment

Passing is a process change rather than automatic payment of the profit shown during evaluation. FTMO requires evaluation-objective checks, identity verification and an account agreement. Reward conditions apply in the subsequent FTMO Account. Distinguish the request eligibility date from review, approval and money arriving.

Topstep Combine profit does not transfer to Express. Express starts at zero while the headline number represents buying power. Express paths have separate qualifying-day, trader-share and per-request conditions. Live has separate rules, and days accumulated in Express are not necessarily Live qualifying days. Do not construct cash flow by automatically combining all stages' records.

This also matters after a payout. Money leaving the account can change the distance from the loss boundary and permitted position size. A lower balance needs another calculation even when the trading method is unchanged. The payout-rule comparison separates displayed profit, requestable money and received cash.

FTMO or Topstep by trading habits: three fit assessments

For a method carrying positions beyond the session, examine holding rules first. Standard Topstep requires daily closing. FTMO CFD requires a phase and account type supporting the intended activity, with exceptions checked carefully. Comparing fees first adds little when one programme requires changing a fundamental action.

For someone already journalling short-term exchange futures, assess whether Topstep's contract limits and loss room fit the trade sequence. Use the actual instrument and floating loss rather than familiarity with the word futures. Experience in one platform does not establish identical settings or order behaviour elsewhere.

A beginner should first complete a practice journal containing trading units, fees, hours and equity sequences. Without those records, account-label comparisons create an appearance of order without explaining whether the rules are workable. Simulation helps teach the process but does not guarantee results under different conditions.

Before purchasing, retain a short document naming the market, programme, loss floor, session close and billing model. Separately check residence acceptance, identification and payment availability; language is not a country. Explain the decision in terms of actions: which programme permits the workflow, what must change and what budget can be lost on attempts. No comparison turns evaluation into guaranteed income.

About the provider

FTMO sells CFD evaluations on simulated accounts. The 2-Step route has profit targets of 10% then 5%, a 5% daily loss limit and a static 10% overall limit; 1-Step has a 3% daily limit and a trailing overall threshold. The evaluation fee is a real expense, while the simulated balance is not a personal deposit. Passing and rewards depend on the rules and agreement and are not guaranteed.
