Ledger review 2026: fees and key features

Ledger makes hardware wallets for crypto: private keys are held on the device, and transactions are signed after on-device approval. Its range includes USB-only devices, Bluetooth models and touchscreens. Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live, manages assets and provides access to third-party services.

Wallets

With self-custody you alone are responsible for the keys. Losing every usable recovery method can mean losing access to the assets.

About the service

Ledger is a self-custody wallet (wallet); it is not an exchange and does not keep your keys for you.

Products and plans

  • Ledger hardware wallets

Self-custody hardware wallets: device-held keys and on-screen approval, with model-specific connections and backup options.

Israel: AvailableThe source documents hardware delivery to Israel, subject to the address, checkout options and delays. It does not establish access to third-party buying, swapping or staking services.

Who it suits

Who it suits

  • For users who want to hold their own keys and are prepared to manage backups and review each transaction.
  • For iPhone users who want a Bluetooth model: Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex or Stax.
  • For frequent signers who prefer reviewing details on a larger touchscreen: Nano Gen5, Flex or Stax.

Who may prefer an alternative

  • For users seeking an exchange order book or leveraged trading; Ledger is a wallet and a gateway to external services.
  • For users who prefer a company to hold account access and provide password resets.

Self-custody

Private keys are stored in the device's Secure Element. The assets themselves remain on the blockchain. The app or a compatible software wallet prepares the transaction, and the device signs it after approval. Optional backup solutions are described separately.

Ledger Nano S Plus
Button-operated OLED screen, USB-C and no battery. Works with desktop and Android; no Bluetooth or iPhone connection.

ST33K1M5 chip with a CC EAL6+ chip rating. Chip certification is not a guarantee for every wallet use.

Ledger Nano X
Button-operated OLED screen, USB-C and Bluetooth. Connects to desktop and Android by cable, and to iPhone by Bluetooth.

ST33J2M0 chip with a CC EAL5+ chip rating.

Ledger Nano Gen5
2.8-inch E Ink touchscreen, USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC. The store's listed model includes a Ledger Recovery Key.

ST33K1M5 chip with a CC EAL6+ chip rating. NFC is used for Recovery Key and Security Key, not as a general app connection.

CC EAL6+ chip rating. Bundle contents and promotions can change.

Ledger Stax

ST33K1M5 chip with a CC EAL6+ chip rating.

Operating systems and app
Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live: Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Ubuntu 20.04+, Android 10+ and iOS 15+.

Windows and Ubuntu require x64; ARM is unsupported on those platforms. iPhone connectivity requires a Bluetooth model. Tablets and Surface Pro are not officially supported.

Assets and compatible wallets
Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other assets listed by Ledger. Some are managed directly in the app; others require a compatible third-party wallet.

Check the asset, network and intended action separately. Key storage and signing support do not guarantee buy, swap or staking support.

Backup and recovery
A newly initialized device generates a 24-word BIP39 recovery phrase using a random-number generator in its Secure Element.

It can also restore compatible 12- or 18-word phrases; a newly generated phrase has 24 words.

Ledger Recovery Key
Physical backup card with a PIN and Secure Element, transferring an encrypted backup over NFC. Compatible with Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax.

This is a local backup, with no subscription or cloud storage; it cannot sign transactions. Three incorrect PIN attempts erase the card's backup. Ledger also recommends retaining a written backup.

Ledger Recover
Optional paid backup service requiring on-device consent and identity verification. An encrypted backup is split among Ledger, Coincover and EscrowTech; recovery requires two fragments.

Separate from Recovery Key. Supported on all five current models; desktop only for Nano S Plus. It does not back up an additional passphrase or reveal the recovery words themselves.

Network fees
Sending assets incurs fees on the relevant network. Fee levels and confirmation speed vary with the network and its activity.

Ledger Wallet provides fee estimates and choices on some networks. There is no single fee for every asset or network.

Buy and swap costs
A swap quote may include a Ledger fee, a provider fee and a return-transfer fee. The network fee for sending the input asset to the provider is shown separately.

Check the quote and the amount to be received. Buy, sell and staking services have separate provider terms; device price, taxes and shipping are separate costs.

Open source and transparency
Ledger Wallet is open source. Parts of Ledger OS are reviewable, but its low-level hardware code is not fully open.
Device and app updates
Ledger releases Ledger OS and app updates. Update methods depend on the model and its installed version.

Have a valid backup ready before updating. Nano X below version 2.4.1 needs a cable for its initial update.

Hardware-wallet shipping to Israel
Israel appears on Ledger's official shipping page. Ledger notes that Colissimo deliveries may take up to six weeks, with regional disruptions causing additional delays.

Delivery options and final prices depend on the address at checkout. This does not establish access to buy, swap or staking services.

Reviewing a transaction before signing
Clear Signing displays readable transaction details on the device when the transaction and application support it. Review those details before approving.

Protecting keys does not prevent losses from an approved malicious transaction.

Advantages and drawbacks

Advantages

  • Transactions can be approved on the device, separately from the computer or phone.
  • Choose between a wired model, Bluetooth devices and touchscreens.
  • Touchscreen models support a physical Recovery Key backup without a cloud-service subscription.

Drawbacks

  • Losing all recovery methods or exposing the recovery phrase can cause loss of access or assets.
  • Ledger Wallet uses debugging services and optional usage analytics; self-custody does not mean anonymity.
  • A hardware wallet does not remove the risk of approving a malicious contract or signing something you do not understand.
